We all know the struggle that comes with having back-to-back engagements — morning yoga, work, go out to lunch, back to work, happy hour with coworkers, and straight to a night out with friends. Finding the time or energy to change your outfit in between each activity is always a challenge, so planning a look in advance that smoothly transitions from day to night with a few quick tweaks is essential. Here’s your game plan.

Choose the Right Outfit

If you have a long day ahead, choose an outfit that is classy and work-appropriate, and something that you can quickly transform into a glam look with a few easy swaps. High-end, monochromatic basics like those from the Shades of Black line are perfect for those of us who are always living life on the go, but aren’t willing to sacrifice style for comfort.

We recommend starting with a few simple but fashion-forward basics. For example, select a dressed-up tee with a dressed-down outer layer (like this SOB shirt with a cool leather effect, layered with an easy flannel-inspired top) and pair with perfectly-fitting skinny jeans and either leather sneakers or simple pointed-toe flats. Add a pop of color to this coordinated look with bold studs, while keeping makeup simple with neutral tones and a medium-shade lipstick. From there, you’re ready to power through your work day like the boss that you are.

Make the Transition

Ready for drinks? Whether you have your evening-look essentials in a bag or pop home before you hit the streets, here are our five tips for taking your OOTD from day to night in a cinch.

1. Jazz Up Your Outer Layer

Trade your blouse or other outer outfit layer for something a bit edgier. We swapped our flannel top for a chic, urban bomber jacket. Another option would be to change your top altogether, opting for this zipper-accented hoodie which layers well with a dark denim jacket or a sleek, silky bomber

2. Swap Out for Bold Jewelry

Accessories are always an easy switch to take your look from weekday warrior to the You who is ready to paint the town. Stash those studs and add some attitude with oversized hoops or colorful fringed dangles. Chunky rings, stacked bangles, or a two-tone zipper necklace are also instant vibe-changers.

3. Refresh Your Face & Add Some Drama

Most makeup will not work day to night, so make sure to take a 60-second refresher break for your face with a hydrating facial mist or some DIY rosewater mist for an instant reset. Do any touch-ups you need to your base and then pick a feature or two to emphasize for a simple, glammed-up look: a liquid matte black cat eye, an extra-shimmery pop of highlighter, or a deep lip add just enough drama without a whole lot of extra effort.

4. Level Up With a Cute Clutch

If you can stash your day bag in your car or leave it at the office, transfer your essentials into a quintessential clutch. We’ve been loving this python-pattern fabric and leather clutch — which easily stores a smartphone, wallet, keys, and lipstick for touch-ups.

5. Put On Your Dancing Shoes

Whether you’re actually going dancing or just dancing your way through the evening, your shoes are the final piece of the puzzle. Ditch your daytime sneakers or flats and throw on a pair of funky, studded ankle boots or snazzy, bedazzled platform slipons.

And with that, you’re ready to go! The right OOTD will inspire you to take your day (and night) by the reins.
